Young students from 8 countries meet at Taipei education fair

Taipei, Nov. 29 (CNA) High school students from Taiwan and eight other countries met in Taipei Sunday as part of an international education exchange program organized jointly by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education (MOE) and the London-based British Council.
“The program, known as ‘Connecting Classroom’ is aimed at promoting globalization of secondary education, ” said Liu Ching-jen, an MOE department chief in charge of international cultural and educational exchange affairs.
Under the three-year program, high school students from Taiwan and the other participating countries have developed courses with the same themes, under the guidance of their teachers, and interacted one another via the Internet, Liu said.
“Now in its second year, the program has proceeded smoothly and proved fruitful, ” Liu said, adding that the ongoing education fair at Taipei’s Chientan Youth Activity Center marks the first time that alarge-scale activity has been arranged for students to conduct face-to-face engagements and discussions.
Students from Taipei City, Taipei County, Kaohsiung City, Changhua County, Hualien County and Tainan City and from seven foreign countries — Britain, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam, are exhibiting their work based on similar themes — exercise and health, climate change and future world.
Japanese students are exhibiting the results of a survey on water quality and garbage recycling in their neighborhood while students from South Korea have produced films and newspapers to express their views on the duties of global citizens.
Students from Taipei City use graphics and illustrations to introduce popular sports and foodstuffs in major countries around the world, while students from Taipei County focus their reports on green energy resources.
Guided tours of historic relics and places of cultural interests have also been organized for foreign students to have them experience Taiwan’s hospitality. (By Lin Szu-yu and Sofia Wu)
