World Vision Taiwan completes homes for typhoon-shattered village
Taipei, Dec. 14 (CANA) The Taiwan chapter of the Christian charity World Vision said Monday that it has finished building 50 permanent houses for survivors of Typhoon Morakot, which devastated parts of Taiwan in August.
A ceremony will be held on Thursday to celebrate the completion of the homes, the group said.
“The celebration on Dec. 17 is a significant milestone for those who are recovering from the typhoon. The homes stand as a symbol of hope for them and of the fact that there are people all around Taiwan who are truly concerned about their future well-being, ” Albert Yu, communications manager of World Vision Taiwan, told the Central News Agency.
The new houses, which will be officially handed over to typhoon-affected families from Jalan Village of the eastern county Taitung on Thursday, will mark the beginning of the process for villagers to rebuild their village into one that is full of new memories and joy, according to World Vision Taiwan.
This is the first batch of 1,200 permanent homes that World Vision Taiwan plans to build for the storm victims in Taitung, Pingtung, Kaohsiung and Chiayi counties, some of the worst affected areas.
The charity has announced that it will invest over NT$1.4 billion (US$433 million) from public donations in its long-term rehabilitation programs to help storm survivors rebuild their lives.
Typhoon Morakot swept through Taiwan from Aug. 8-9, killing more than 600 people. The damage caused by the typhoon in parts of southern and eastern Taiwan was the worst in 50 years. (By Rachel Chan) Enditem/cs
