Taiwan wins three silver medals at East Asian Games
Hong Kong, Dec. 7 (CNA) Taiwan took three silver medals in taekwondo at the 2009 East Asian Games in Hong Kong Tuesday, the final day of the taekwondo events.
Chuan Chia-chia, in the women’s 72 kg category, won silver after being edged out by her South Korean rival for the gold in a close fight that ended 4-5, while Sun Ai-chi, in the women’s over 72 kg category, also took silver in a 4-5 defeat to her South Korean challenger.
Wu Ming-chieh won silver the men’s over 84 kg category after being defeated 5-6 by a South Korean opponent.
The three silvers added to the medal tally of the Chinese Taipei team brought the total to two gold medals, nine silvers and five bronzes in taekwondo as of that afternoon — a performance on par with an earlier forecast by Taiwan’s sports authorities.
Chinese Taipei coach Liu Ching-wen said he was satisfied with his team’s performance in the taekwondo events but commented that it would have performed better if the athletes had more experience. South Korea dominated the taekwondo events at the fifth East Asian Games, having taken six gold medals on Tuesday alone for a total of 13 taekwondo golds, ahead of Taiwan’s two golds and China’s single gold medal.
Taiwan won its first gold of the Sunday when taekwondo athlete Hsu Chia-lin, fighting in the 54 kg category, defeated his South Korean opponent. It was also Hsu’s first gold.
