Taiwan shares close slightly higher
Taipei, Feb. 8 (CNA) Share prices on Taiwan’s stock exchange were largely flat Monday, with a rebound in construction issues offset by slight losses in the broad electronics sector.
The Taiex rose 3.01 points, or 0.04 percent, to finish at 7,215.88, as investors seemed to be playing their hands conservatively with only two trading sessions left before the Lunar New Year break.
The local bourse lost 5.6 percent last week, the biggest weekly drop since last August.
The stock market opened at 7,236.63 and fluctuated between a high of 7,253.24 and a low of 7,173.18.
A total of 3.03 billion shares changed hands on market turnover of NT$83.95 billion (US$2.61 billion).
Five of eight major stock categories gained ground, with construction issues the biggest gainers, rising by 3 percent.
Bank and financial stocks rose by 1.2 percent, paper and pulp shares were up 0.8 percent, and foodstuff issues gained 0.4 percent.
Plastic and chemical stocks remained unchanged.
Textile stocks fell 0.5 percent, electronics and machinery issues declined by 0.3 percent, and cement shares lost 0.2 percent.
Gainers outnumbered losers 1,735 to 1,179, with 294 stocks remaining unchanged.
Foreign investors and Chinese QDIIs were net sellers of NT$15.72 billion worth of shares. The last session in which they were net buyers of shares was on Jan. 21. (By Y.L. Kao)
