Strong business at electronics show a sign of recovery: TAITRA

Taipei, Oct. 9 (CNA) Buyers placed substantial orders on the first day of the 35th Taipei International Electronic Show (TAITRONICS) Thursday, an indication that the electronics industry is on the road to recovery, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) said Friday.

On the opening day of the show that attracted more than 10,000 domestic and foreign buyers, US$150 million in orders were given to local suppliers in private face-to-face meetings, a TAITRA statement said.

The one-day total nearly matched the US$170 million in orders placed in the three days of private meetings at last year’s show, continuing a run of promising news in an industry that has been battered by the global economic downturn.

According to local customs statistics, electronics has been one of Taiwan’s three fastest growing export sectors in recent months. Electronics shipments in August were US$550 million higher than in July.

August electronics shipments were still 32 percent lower than in August 2008, but the rate of decline was more than 10 percentage points lower than for July.

Jointly hosted by TAITRA and the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association, the electronics show will run from Oct. 8-11. at the Taiwan World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall in Taipei.

Electronic components, manufacturing and testing equipment, LEDs and lighting, and safety and security products, are among some of the products being highlighted at TAITRONICS 2009, according to TAITRA.

Top caliber Taiwanese suppliers, such as Tektronix, Agilent, Taiwan Alpha Electronic, OasisTek, GWinstek, TYNTEK, GKB are among the show’s 850 exhibitors occupying 1,700 booths who are hoping to meet the sourcing needs of buyers from around the globe.

“The combination of China’s enormous production capability and Taiwan’s strict quality control and R&D offers worldwide buyers more product variety and greater flexibility at a competitive price, ” TAITRA said in the statement.

Aside from the star lineup of Taiwanese suppliers, the show also features a “China Pavilion” comprised of about 100 Chinese vendors packed into a 1,080-square-meter display area.

TAITRA said a total of 850 one-on-one meetings will be organized during the exhibition to broker business opportunities between Taiwanese suppliers and foreign buyers.

It is expecting 5,000 buyers from abroad and 70,000 professionals from Taiwan to visit the show. (By Rachel Chan) Enditem/ls
