Restrictions eased on mainland business visitors

Restrictions on mainland Chinese visitors traveling to Taiwan for business purposes will be further eased by the end of this month, according to Tsai Hsung-hsiung, minister of the Cabinet-level Council for Economic Planning and Development Nov. 9.
“To meet increasing demand, restrictions on cross-strait trade and economic exchanges need to be further relaxed,” Tsai said. “Once the new measure is launched, the number of mainland business visitors is expected to increase 30 percent.”
Under the revised rules, local companies with annual revenues of NT$100 million (US$3.07 million), instead of NT$1 billion previously, will be permitted to sponsor mainland business visitors applying for multi-entry visas.
The decision came following a review by the CEPD, Ministry of Interior and Mainland Affairs Council of suggestions presented by the Chinese National Association of Industry and Commerce, a local non-profit organization comprised of leading commercial and industrial groups.
Warming cross-strait economic and trade relations has seen the number of mainland business visitors to Taiwan increase from 6,000 in 2008 to an average of 11,000 this year. (CYH-JSM)
