President to review election responsibilities: KMT officials

Taipei, Dec. 8 (CNA) The ruling Kuomintang (KMT) will make an election review report at the regular weekly meeting of the Central Standing Committee Wednesday, party officials revealed after an initial review meeting Tuesday.

President Ma Ying-jeou, in his capacity as party chairman, will also review his responsibility for the party’s “unsatisfactory results, ” the officials added.

Ma himself chaired Tuesday’s meeting, during which party members reviewed the factors affecting the election, including the administration’s performance, campaign effectiveness, the party nomination system and the economic environment in general, according to KMT spokesman Lee chien-jung.

He said Ma clarified his statement after the elections regarding the economic environment, saying that he was not blaming the unfavorable economic environment but was rather stressing the responsibility of the KMT to take the initiative in improving the economic environment.

Lee also quoted Ma as saying that the party is determined to discipline candidates found guilty of vote-buying and that he might apologize to the public for vote-buying by some KMT candidates and a shooting incident involving a failed KMT candidate in Yunlin County, southern Taiwan.
