November large TFT-LCD revenue falls to 2-year low: DisplaySearch
In November, global shipments of thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels declined 21% from previous month (MoM) and 25% (YoY) from a year earlier to 28.5 million units, the lowest monthly level since May 2007, according to DisplaySearch, the worldwide leader in flat panel display (FPD) market research and consulting.
November revenue for large-area TFT-LCD panels fell to US$3.8 billion, down 24% MoM and 50% YoY, the lowest since July 2006.
The market-research firm also found that panel demand has weakened significantly in all three of the major TFT-LCD applications–notebook PCs, monitors and TVs–and all panel suppliers have reduced capacity utilization.
Notebook-PC panel shipments in November were 8.5 million, down 25% MoM and 23% YoY, which is the lowest level since May 2007. Monitor-panel shipments were 10.9 million, down 22% MoM and 33% YoY, which is the lowest level since June 2006. TV-panel shipments were 8.0 million, down 17% MoM and 16% YoY, which is the lowest since September 2007.
In November, Taiwan-based panel makers together won a 34.3% share in worldwide large-sized (over-10-inch) TFT-LCD shipments, compared to, for example, 44.3% (world`s No. 1) in August and 45% in June.
In November, LG Display (formerly LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd.) was the leader in unit shipments with a 26% market share, while Samsung Electronics led with a 29.4% share. Both shares are the highest level for the leading suppliers in four years.
David Hsieh, president of DisplaySearch Taiwan Office and vice president of DisplaySearch Greater China, pointed out that the TFT-LCD industry is going through the hardest time in a decade, as shipments and revenues dramatically decline.
