Morakot Post-Disaster Reconstruction Council Deputy CEO Chern Jenn-chuan made an inspection visit to the Yong Quan wetlands in the southern county of Pingtung Feb. 3 after concerns were raised by People First Party Legislator Chang Hsiao-feng and others that a nearby drainage system construction project being carried out by the county government to solve flooding problems in the area poses a threat to the wetlands. After inspecting the site, Chen said the construction project would be postponed and the amount of land to be expropriated around the wetlands would be increased. With more surrounding land, the wetlands will act as a flood detention pond during the flood season, and as a wetlands park during the dry season, he said.
