Taipei, Feb. 28 (CNA) The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) will expand a “Bridge-building Project ” by holding more cross-Taiwan Strait conferences this year with the aim of bolstering industrial exchanges and cooperation between Taiwan and China, an MOEA official said Sunday.
For example, the MOEA hopes to reach an agreement with China on the establishment of a standard e-book format for the Chinese-language market in the hope that substantive conclusions can be achieved when a cross-strait conference on digital content is held in Taipei in August, according to the official.
After consulting with the Taiwan Affairs Office of China’s State Council, the MOEA will hold 17 meetings in Taiwan and China, including five more on the use of cleaner production technologies in electronics and the areas of digital content (including e-book/animation/games) , textiles and fibers, biomedicine and aviation maintenance, all of which will be held in Taipei, the official added.
The one on cleaner production has been added at the request of China, which has an increasing demand for cleaner production services as there is an imminent need there for recycling of electronic waste after the launch of a subsidy program last year to boost electronic appliance sales in rural areas, according to the official.
Taiwanese companies, with their rich experience and strong technical abilities in this area, can tap into the vast Chinese market through cross-strait cooperation, the official went on.
Another 11 cross-strait meetings will be held in China to build bridges for the bicycle, precision machinery, automobile, telecommunications, green energy, food, wholesale and retail, e-commerce and logistics industries.
Industries on the two sides have signed 50 cooperative memorandums of understanding after holding 11 conferences in Taiwan last year, according to the official.
Some 4,200 industry representatives from Taiwan and China attended the meetings last year and 130 firms forged cooperative ties, according to MOEA statistics. (By Lin Su-yuan and Y.L. Kao)
