M. Lyushun SHEN, the Representative of Taiwan in Brussels, recently left Belgium after being appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in Taipei.
In his farewell message M. Lyushun SHEN pointed out that “Among the “three” in my portfolio, I am proud to say that I have witnessed the relationships between Taiwan and each of them being further strengthened. To cite a few examples, with a new EU Center in Taiwan, the experience of European integration becomes even more inspirational for our new approach toward Mainland China. More historical ties with
the Belgian people were unearthed, in particular the unusual marriage between our first Foreign Minister of the Republic of China, Mr. LOU, Tseng-tsiang and his Belgian wife, Mme. Berthe Bovy. Minister Lou later gave up all his government positions and went to Bruges, his wife’s hometown, to become a Benedictine monk in a local abbey after his beloved wife died in 1927. I am also happy to see that, with my help, the Luxembourg trade office is to be set up in Taipei to further the hi-tech cooperation between two sides.”
Mr. Shen Lyushun is considered a brilliant diplomat. His new position will allow him to use his vast experience, while his country is gradually being recognized on the international scene and pursuing a cautious rapprochement with Bejing
