Large-sized TFT-LCD shipments hit record highs in June
Global shipments of large-sized (over-10-inch) thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels hit a new monthly high of 46.7 million units, up 8% MoM and 24% year-on-year (YoY), according to DisplaySearch, a display market researcher and consultant.
In terms of units shipped, LG Display (formerly LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd.) led with a 24.5% market share, followed by Samsung Electronics (24.1%) and Taiwan`s largest panel supplier AU Optronics Corp. (AUO, 16.6%).
DisplaySerach said that June’s shipment results indicate a continuation of the large-sized TFT-LCD industry’s recovery. The company forecasted that shipments would increase again in July, but at a slower rate due to the glass-substrate supply shortage limiting panel makers’ production.
All three major applications: notebook PC, monitor and TV, showed MoM growths in June. DisplaySearch’s research found that LCD-TV panels had the highest YoY growth at 57%, followed by notebook panels at 19%, and monitor panels at 12%. Also noteworthy, notebook PC and LCD TV panel shipments both reached monthly record highs, at 14.7 and 13.1 million units, respectively. The 18 million LCD monitor panels shipped was the highest since May 2008.
According to David Hsieh, vice president of DisplaySearch, June`s results broke many monthly records, such as total large-sized shipments, notebook PC and LCD TV panel shipments, panel area shipped, and mini-note shipments. “This is representative of the strong recovery in end-market demand, which is not limited to TV, but also includes notebook PCs and desktop monitors,” he added.
