ITRI ties up with major players in flexible display and touch panel market
Two leading companies in Taiwan, AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), the largest thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panel manufacturer on the island, and ELAN Microelectronics Corp. (EMC), a major IC design house, recently announced to cooperate with the domestic Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in flexible display- and touch control-related fields.
The cooperation will proceed under the Science and Technology Program sponsored by the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, ITRI said.
John Chen, general director of ITRI’s Display Technology Center (DTC), pointed out that the flexible display has big business potentials for being able to meet demands from future lifestyle, with electronic-paper (e-paper) display being a hot new item in the next one to two years. He added that ITRI’s cooperation project with AUO and EMC is the first try to integrate the advanced flexible-display technology developed by a government-sponsored research institute with private makers’ application products in Taiwan.
ITRI will develop large-sized, flexible e-paper with AUO, with the former to provide the technology bases for plastic substrate and the release film, while the latter to handle the development of mass-production techniques for flexible active-matrix and back plates as well as integrating electrophoresis technologies. Some achievements have been worked out and will be demonstrated in the near future, Chen said.
ITRI will also develop large-sized, soft multi-point touch panels with EMC, Chen said. The partnership will focus on products developed to target mainly flexible e-book reader applications to provide lighter, thinner, and easier-operation solutions.
