In line with the so-called “folk economy” being trumpeted by Premier Wu Den-yih, the Executive Yuan (the Cabinet) plans to construct low-cost housing units, so as to solve the problem of exorbitant housing prices, a chief complaint among the local populace.

The Construction and Planning Agency, under the Ministry of Interior, has reportedly planned to construct low-cost housing units along the projected mass rapid-transit system for Taoyuan International Airport in three plots near Linkou, Nankan, and the airport, totaling 300 hectares in space. The neighborhood of Danhai new town in Taipei County is also a candidate spot. All these spots are within the scope of 30-minute transportation from Taipei railway station via the airport MRT system.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior has appropriated NT$1.5 billion budget next year for subsidizing the purchase of 10,000 housing units by young people, in the form of NT$2 million loan for each case which is interest free for the first two years. The budget will also be used to provide up to NT$3,600 monthly subsidy for housing rent to young people. The budget is a continuation of an existing program, which has subsidized 16,000 housing buyers and 8,000 tenants this year.
