Government obliged to open Taiwan pavilion at trade fairs
Taipei, Dec. 15 (CNA) The legislature passed an amendment to the Foreign Trade Act on Tuesday that will require the government to set up a “Taiwan pavilion” or Taiwan exhibition zone at domestic and foreign trade fairs to help promote Taiwan-made products.
Legislator Wang Sing-nan of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), who initiated the amendment, said it is a challenge for Taiwanese businesses to attend international trade fairs overseas because of the time, money and manpower they need to set up their own booth.
The government, therefore, is obliged to help fund businesses in promoting Taiwan-made products whenever possible, including by setting up a Taiwan pavilion or exhibition zone at trade shows or assisting local businesses in attending overseas exhibitions, he argued.
The amendment will help meet those goals and boost the image of Taiwan-made products by requiring the government to subsidize the activities of local companies, organizations and civil groups in promoting foreign trade, Wang said.
Meanwhile, the amendment will also require that traders of strategic high-tech products declare the ultimate users of the goods they are shipping to prevent them from being sold to terrorists.
Any unauthorized or unapproved changes are not allowed, with violators subject to a maximum jail sentence of five years and a maximum fine of NT$1.5 million (US$46,000). (By Chou Yung-chieh and Elizabeth Hsu)
