Government keeps mum on Chen’s itinerary
The itinerary of Chen Yunlin, chairman of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait, remains secret as the government seeks to head off any potential threat to the mainland Chinese politician’s safety during his visit to the island next week.
“The government has the responsibility to ensure Chen’s personal safety and maintain security at optimum levels throughout the five-day talks,” said Taiwan’s Straits Exchange Foundation Chairman Chiang Ping-kun Dec. 14.
“The SEF has completed the necessary preparatory work to ensure the Taichung talks run smoothly,” Chiang said. “We do not foresee any problems during Chen’s visit.”
Downplaying talk of opposition Democratic Progressive Party-organized mass protests during the meeting, Chiang said the SEF will maintain order at the Windsor Hotel, the venue for the talks. “As for security outside the hotel, this will be the responsibility of the Taichung City Government.”
Given the high profile nature of the SEF-ARATS talks, Chiang believes they are a great opportunity for Taiwan to showcase its world-renowned warmth and hospitality. “Each and every member of the public should make good use of this special chance to put Taiwan’s hospitality on display.”
Separately, the DPP called for 100,000 supporters to rally in Taichung Dec. 20 against Chen’s visit. The demonstration will be led by DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen, along with senior party members, including former Vice President Annette Lu and former premiers Frank Hsieh, Su Tseng-chang and Yu Shyi-kun.
