ECFA could help revive local film industry: report
Taipei, Dec. 19 (CNA) The signing of the proposed economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) with China will benefit Taiwan’s film industry by facilitating cross-Taiwan Strait cooperation and providing a broader market for local filmmakers, a Legislative Yuan report has concluded.
A report released Saturday by the Legislative Research Bureau (LRB) argued that China is the biggest market in the Greater China region and therefore Taiwan and China should cooperate more on producing major motion pictures.
Signing the economic pact with China could bring more opportunities for Taiwan’s filmmakers to obtain co-production rights and broadcasting rights in China, the report said.
It argued that cross-border reciprocal investment is a trend among international film industries because it can lower risk and expand markets and said the big China market should not be ignored.
The LRB mentioned that the closer economic partnership arrangement (CEPA) between Hong Kong and China, signed in 2003, has helped open up the Chinese market to Hong Kong’s movie industry and give Hong Kong’s directors more space to create movies.
Taiwanese director Leon Dai, a Golden Horse Award winner, said Thursday at a forum that the government needs to put effort into reviving Taiwan’s film industry.
Dai said it would be too late to do so three to five years from now, when China’s film industry becomes more stable.
