With high-tech products scrambling to be delivered before the Christmas season, the top-two air carriers in Taiwan, including China Airlines Corp. (CAL) and EVA Airway Ltd., saw monthly sales surge in November.

CAL posted NT$5.9 billion (about US$183.22 million) in revenues from cargo transport in November, for a historic-high monthly record. The company saw overall sales hit NT$11 billion (US$341.61 million) in November, the highest record since September last year. EVA posted NT$7.4 billion (US229.81 million) in November sales, a new yearly high.

An industry insider said the rush shipment of high-tech products as cellphones and computers by manufacturers has led to surging freightage because of limited air-cargo capacities. Since the beginning of September, the freightage along European and American routes have risen 30% on average. The rising demand for cargo volume, air carriers expect to see the boom last till the end of December, as well as achieve handsome profits in the fourth quarter of this year.

Many air carriers have grounded part of their air-cargo services to cope with the global downturn, with CAL leading rivals to fly two cargo aircrafts to meet rising demand amid the economic recovery.
