Apple Daily: U.S. is most important

ditorial abstract (File 6 of a daily roundup)

Su Chi, secretary-general of the National Security Council (NSC), gave a press conference Friday for the first time to explain the dilemma Taiwan is facing. Comparing Taiwan’s situation as sinking in a whirlpool along with three strong powers — the United States, Japan and China — Su said Taiwan is incapable of creating any change.

While the strategy for Taiwan is “to reconcile with China, befriend Japan and cling to the United States, ” he said, “we cannot risk breaking up with any one of them, otherwise probably the other two will snub us.”

From a pragmatic point of view, Su’s comments were not improper. In an age of globalization, there is no need to find fault with other countries.

Why is President Ma Ying-jeou’s administration giving the impression that it has only attended to relations with China and has gradually moved away from Japan and the U.S.? Probably, Taiwan’s relations with China have been poor over the last 10 years, and the Ma administration, while doubling its efforts to seek improvements, gives the impression of leaning too much toward China.

In reality, the U.S., not China, is most important to Taiwan, and the government should demonstrate to the people its efforts to promote relations with the U.S. in order to relieve concern that the administration might be selling Taiwan out to China. (By Lillian Lin)
