Amphibious tour vehicle unveiled in Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung, Dec. 18 (CNA) An amphibious vehicle to be used for sightseeing tours of Kaohsiung City was unveiled Friday ahead of the official launch of commercial service on March 2.

The amphibious vehicle that can travel on both land and water, often referred to as a duck boat, will be offering rides on a trial basis to travel agents interested in trying the service between Sunday and Jan. 21, 2010, Ou Hsiu-ching, a Kaohsiung transportation official, said Friday.

The trial tours will operate for 20 minutes on land and 40 minutes on water to give passengers the best views of Lotus Lake and the surrounding area, according to Ou.

Once the duck boat passes a final check Friday, it will be put into service on water starting next week. But the land tours will only be available once the vehicle is registered and obtains a license, Ou said.

A second round of test runs will be held from Jan. 22 to Feb. 28, with free tickets offered to tourists staying in hotels in the southern port city, Ou said.

Once the service formally begins, the vehicle will conduct six tours per day with a maximum of 30 passengers per tour. Ticket prices will be NT$300 for adults and NT$150 for children, according to Ou.

A second duck boat is being built and is expected to ready next March.
