Acer’s Wang optimistic about global electronics industry Prospects
Chairman J.T. Wang of Acer Inc. recently forecast electronics industry to grow better in the first quarter than the second quarter, as well as in the second half than the first half.
Wang based his optimistic forecast on his belief that the consumer panic triggered by the global economic recession would be gone in the second half this year. He forecast global electronics industry to rise 30-40% in the second half of the year from the first half, as usually seen in the past.
Among the products that are expected to drive up this year`s electronics market is netbook computer, which is only half the size of a laptop and specifically used to be connected to the Internet. Wang estimated global shipment of the gadget to top 25-30 million systems throughout this year, helping boost shipment of notebook computers to 170 million systems worldwide. He projected shipment of netbooks to account for 25% of notebook shipment worldwide in 2010.
For Wang’s company, netbook shipment is set at 12-15 million units throughout this year, constituting around 40-50% of global shipment of the miniature computer.
In response to reports that supplies of netbook components were running short, Wang said the reports are groundless. But he conceded LED backlights for the computer and liquid-crystal display (LCD) panels of some sizes for the computers are strained in supply.
