Taiwan’s Acer Inc. overtook Dell Inc. to become the world’s second largest supplier of personal computers in the third quarter of 2009, according to the latest market statistics.
A recent report released by U.S.-based market research firm Gartner Inc. shows that Acer shipped a total of 12.48 million PCs in the quarter, thanks to its success in netbooks and consumer ultra-low voltage notebooks. This represents a whopping 23.6-percent year-on-year gain, while in comparison, the U.S.-based Dell experienced a decline of 6.7 percent over the same period.
Acer ramped up its market share from 12.5 percent in the third quarter of 2008 to 15.4 percent this year, dwarfing Dell’s 12.8-percent share, down from last year’s 13.8 percent, to become the world’s second largest PC maker, Gartner pointed out.
Acer is also closing in on Hewlett-Packard Co., which regained the top spot with a 19.9-percent share. The mainland’s Lenovo Group and Japan’s Toshiba Corp. remained fourth and fifth, respectively, on the list.
Market data shows Acer as the leader in terms of percentage growth among the top five PC makers with a 25.6-percent year-on-year upsurge, said IDC, another U.S. market intelligence firm. Gartner’s version revealed a 23.6-percent increase.
Acer’s stock traded up by NT$0.2 to close at NT$81.9 (US$2.54) per share Oct. 15 in the local bourse.
According to IDC, global PC shipments for the quarter rose 2.3 percent year on year, thanks to strong sales in lower-cost notebooks and netbooks.
Gartner also reported that global shipments reversed a downward trend in the quarter to reach 80.9 million PCs, with a 0.5-percent increase over the same period last year and a sequential upturn of 18 percent. The research firm had originally expected a year-on-year decline of 5.6 percent.
In a breakdown of regional demand, Gartner pointed out that markets in the U.S. and the Asia/Pacific region showed stronger signs of recovery, while mainland China and other emerging markets reported double-digit growth in shipment terms. The mainland, for example, recorded a towering 28.5-percent increase in the period. Europe, the Middle East and Africa, however, failed to register significant improvement. (SFC-THN)
